Waite, one of the major architects of the Occult Revival, its most prolific author and one whose influence can be traced in the work of several protégés – including Evelyn Underhill and Charles Williams. Waite’s writing career spanned sixty years, from 1878 to 1938, and a remarkable range of subjects: from poetry and fairy tales to the standard translations of Eliphas Levi and major studies of alchemy, Freemasonry, mysticism and every aspect of the occult sciences. R.A. Gilbert’s bibliography includes, as well as every book edited or translated by Waite, all of his periodical contributions that it has been possible to trace and a complete record of the rituals that were privately printed for his Rosicrucian Order. There is an Introduction by the late Geoffrey Watkins, whose London bookshop was for so long a meeting place for Waite and his circle.
